2022 FALL FIBER SERIES
Nettles
Saturday, Month XX
10am- 5pm
Location, MD
Workshop description:
Explore nettle fibers as we hand process stalks of wood nettle (Laportea canadensis) & stinging nettle (Urtica dioica), two of the world's most ancient garment plants. Learn about propagation & tending of nettles, harvesting nettle stalks, & dew retting stalks of both species. Then we'll spend the day processing the retted stalks into fine fiber for string and rope, drop spinning and weaving, thread making, and more.
Prepare to sink into methodical handiwork for most of the day. Participants are invited to focus on the projects of their choice according to their interest, which could be one or all of the methods taught throughout the day. Drop spindles will be available for spinning the fibers, and cotton cloth and other materials will be available to practice making and sewing with nettle thread (just like you would a spool of commercial thread). Students can also focus on hand-twining fibers, for string, candle-wicks, braiding, or strap-weaving.
Note- this class will not include processing fresh green nettle stalks.
