Mushroom, Lichen, & Natural Plant Dyes

a beginner's workshop

w/ Sam Eff & Victoria Greba

Saturday, Feb 22

12pm- 4pm

OHerbals Apothecary, Baltimore MD

Workshop description:

Curious about natural dyeing?

The world is full of color, and as humans we have forever been in pursuit of capturing that color. This class takes an experimental approach to exploring the dye capabilities of mushrooms, lichen, and plant material. We will talk about kitchen scale dyeing, what types of approaches you can take, and how to have success using the things you find during your walks in the woods. Sam takes the approach of using modern and mostly non-toxic ingredients that you can find in the grocery store, and Victoria will talk about methods of dyeing natural leather.

Each participant will leave with a skein of dyed Merino wool.

About Sam ~

Samantha Eff is a naturalist, a teacher, an artist, a forager, a mushroom and plant nerd, and a constant student of all of the wonders of the forest. She is the owner operator of a small mushroom growing and foraging business in Baltimore, Maryland called The Mushroomworks. This connection with the forest has lead to a rebirth of her mind, body, and spirit, and she wants nothing more than to spread that joy.

She has taught both low tech and traditional mushroom growing techniques, edible mushroom identification, weed walks, botanical illustration of mushrooms, spore print art, and natural dyeing. When not walking in the woods, she can be found teaching art in Baltimore, or kicking around her mini-homestead with her partner, son, and critters.

She can be found on Etsy, Instagram, and Facebook under The Mushroomworks.

About the Venue:

OHerbals Apothecary is a private healing space located in Upper Fells Point, near Patterson Park. The apothecary is fairly small, so expect the living room/classroom space to be cozy! Coffee, tea, water, & snacks will be provided.
